Measure animal back-fat quickly and accurately with the Renco® Lean-Meater®.  The improved Series 12 measures total thickness of the skin and up to three layers of back fat. The instrument displays on a large, easy-to-read LED, the number of fat layers detected and the total thickness in millimeters with a greater accuracy than ever before.
Use the Renco® Lean-Meater® for determining sow condition, selecting gilts and assessing genetic quality as indicated by back-fat measurement. Other uses include fat measurement in cattle and sheep and blubber measurement in aquatic animals.
The Renco® Lean-Meater® provides accurate electronic readings of backfat depth in big bright numbers. Proven accurate to within ± MM (.039) or 1 digit, this device can measure total thicknesses from 5-40 mm. It has the unique ability to measure the third layer of backfat and will automatically detect and display the number of layers present.
The instrument features rugged all-metal construction and a Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeable battery which requires no recycling.   Battery-charging and low-power indicators are also provided.
From the skin surface, the Renco® Lean-Meater® sends safe, non-intrusive ultrasonic pulses into the animal tissue.  The pulses, which cause no tissue damage, sensation or pain, are echoed back to the Lean-Meater® probe.  The echo rate relates directly to the thickness of fat layer(s) which is reported by the Lean-Meater® in millimeters.   Measurements are non-invasive—no piercing of the skin so no chance of infection. The Lean-Meater® LED display provides greater visibility in dark and bright lighting conditions and functions dependably over a wide temperature range.
The Renco® Lean-Meater® is simple and easy to use.  Just wet the test site (usually by the last rib) with a coupling fluid such as cooking oil.  Press the button to turn the instrument on and apply the probe end to the animal’s skin.  Move the probe around to remove air bubbles. The display locks in when the total depth and number of layers has been determined.  The large, bright digital display shows the number of fat layers detected and the total thickness (millimeters) of the skin and fat layers.
The Lean-Meater® is not designed to measure muscle tissue.
