Add tabletop storage and global style to any surface with these two vintage ox horn wood boxes. Hwagak haem is a traditional Korean craft that involves painting on transparent sheets made from ox horn. Due to the scarcity of tortoise shells in Korea, ox horns were used for craft work for royal families and aristocrats. Each of these footed square box features a hinged lid with a metal turtle clasp and turtle neck closures (symbols of good fortune), scalloped metalwork on the corners and deep interiors lined with silk. Panels of ox horn are skillfully painted with peonies, clouds, lotus, fruit trees, persons enjoying music, play, food and life; all auspicious characters. The smaller box measures 3 ¼” x 4” x 4”, and the larger box measures 3 ½” x 3 ½” x 3 ½”. Imported from Korea and purchased from Bergdorf Goodman, the luxury goods department store in Manhattan, these boxes are in rare and in impeccable condition.
